October 12th 6-8PM: 3285 20th Street at THE THING Quarterly Office: Book Signing for Artists' Magazines with author, Gwen Allen. Co-presented by Southern Exposure and THE THING Quarterly.
Gwen will be on hand signing copies of her book. We will have copies of the book available for purchase. We will also be exhibiting a portion of Gwen's personal collection of Artist Publications from the 70's to present. They will be on display in our office for the party and over the next two weeks. We invite you to come down during our office hours and inspect them more closely. Wednesdays 11AM-7PM, Thursdays 11-4PM and Friday's 11-4PM

Southern Exposure and THE THING Quarterly will host a discussion of the history, present tense, and future of artists’ publications. Gwen Allen’s new book Artists' Magazines: An Alternative Space for Art (MIT Press), serves as the starting point for the conversation, which surveys American and European artists’ publications from the 1960s to the 1980s. Allen will give a presentation, which will be followed by a discussion of its relationship with a variety of contemporary publishing projects, from art journals to edition projects, and zines. Participants include Courtney Dailey, founding member of project MOBILIVRE-BOOKMOBILE project and the Bookmobile collective; Chris Duncan, founder of Land and Sea; Eleanor Hanson, co-founder of The Present Group; Jeff Khonsary, publisher of Fillip magazine, and will be moderated by Gallerist Steven Wolf.
