This project grew out of our desire to have a form of printed information about THE THING that we could take with us to some of the book and art fairs that we were attending in the fall of 08. But we wanted the delivery of information to be more than a card or a pamphlet. So we began speaking with Tucker Nichols, who worked with us on
issue 3.5 of THE THING, about the possibility of creating a map that would be a map of anywhere and nowhere at the same time. To really make this project work right, we invited the creative team of Brett and Scott at
Macfadden and Thorpe design.
Tucker Nichols has had recent solo shows at ZieherSmith Gallery in New York, Lincart and Gallery 16 in San Francisco, and the Kunstpanorama in Luzern. His work has been featured at the Drawing Center and John Connelly Presents in New York, Rocket Gallery in Tokyo, and a recent show curated by Dave Eggers at Apex Gallery in New York. His drawings have been published in McSweeney’s, J&L Books, Zoetrope: All Story, Nieves Books and The New York Times. Nichols’ most recent book, Postcards From Vermont, was published by the Expanding Color System. He is currently artist-in-residence at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
Nichols has a BA from Brown University and an MA from Yale University, both in the History of Chinese Painting. He lives near San Francisco. He is represented by ZieherSmith. For more information on Tucker visit:
